Great American Smoke Out

Date:
11/19/2009 9:00 AM 8:00 PM

Description:
Thursday, November 19, 2009 Grand Rapids Community College is pleased to announce its 2nd Great American Smokeout. The American Cancer Society's Great American Smokeout is an annual event held all over the United States to encourage Americans to quit smoking tobacco. Every year since 1976, on the third Thursday in November, smokers across the country participate by smoking less or quitting for the day. The event encourages smokers and nonsmokers to invite loved ones to quit smoking and to inform them of the tools available to quit smoking for good.

In the past year, 39.8 percent of the 43.4 million Americans who smoke attempted to quit for at least one day, and this event is a great opportunity to encourage individuals to make a long-term plan to quit. Research shows that smokers are most successful in quitting when they have some means of support, such as nicotine replacement products, counseling, smoking cessation hotlines, guide books, and encouragement from friends and family.

Great American Smokeout events will include:

Adopt-a-smoker – This portion of the event encourages nonsmokers to invite friends and loved ones to quit smoking and support them in that effort by Adopting them. Here is how it works:

1. The Adopter and Adoptee complete an “Adoption “form. The forms can be found at the following locations beginning Monday, November 16: Enrollment Center, Library, ATC Computer Lab, Cafeteria (by the cash registers), Art & Bev’s, Admissions Office in Sneden Hall, and Tassell and Thompson M-TECs.

2. Completed forms need to be turned in before noon on Thursday, November 19 at any of the G.A.S. (Great American Smokeout) Stations around campus. The Adoptee will receive a Survival Kit which will include candy, suckers, gum, tips on how to work toward staying smoke free, etc. For their support and help in this endeavor, the Adopter will receive $5 in Raider Bucks good in the cafeteria. As an added incentive, the names of all registered Adopters and Adoptees will go into a drawing for a pair of movie tickets.

G.A.S. Stations – There will be G.A.S. Stations at various locations around campus with information tables, games, and more. These G.A.S. Stations will be open from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. at the following locations on main campus: 4th Floor Main Building, ATC Computer lab, 1st Floor Sneden Hall, Cafeteria, and Winchester Alley. There will also be Stations at the Tassell & Thompson M-TECs, Midtown Campus, and both Learning Corner locations.

According to the American Cancer Society, tobacco use is the single largest preventable cause of disease and premature death in the United States. Each year, smoking accounts for an estimated 443,000 premature deaths, including 38,000 deaths among nonsmokers as a result of secondhand smoke. Half of all Americans who continue to smoke will die from smoking-related diseases.
